Congratulations to Geoffrey Vaartstra for successfully defending his PhD on Kinetics of Heat and Mass Transfer Near the Liquid-Vapor Interface! In his thesis, Geoff examined the fundamental, kinetic limit of heat/mass transfer by evaporation and condensation. He experimentally validated the kinetic theory for condensation heat transfer and demonstrated that the liquid-vapor interface of water behaves in a nearly ideal manner so long as contamination is rigorously mitigated. He also utilized advanced computational techniques to evaluate evaporation/condensation models that are used for design and optimization in various applications such as electronics cooling, membrane distillation, and steam power plants.
